WIFI Technology
Most Wi-Fi equipment manufacturers deliver routers that are configured for simple and rapid installation. This often means that all the security options are deactivated.
The use of public WIFI, however, can sometimes expose you to unwanted threats.
Most WIFI hardware manufacturers deliver their configured routers for quick and easy installation. To do this, all security options are often disabled.
This poses two problems:
- Someone with malicious intent can spy on your Internet line, for example your e-mail passwords.
- You are responsible for the use that is made of your Internet line. Unwanted visitors may go to fishy sites or misuse your connection. When this happens, the intrusion leaves no trace and you must demonstrate that you are in no way responsible for it.
How to limit the risk
- Avoid connecting to a public WIFI network and prefer to use mobile data networks when possible.
- Make sure that the connection to your WIFI network is done in an encrypted manner (for example, using a custom and complex WPA2 key).
- Make sure to change the default password of the Wi-Fi router's admin console.
- Use a VPN (Virtual Private Network). If you must use a public WIFI, transmitted data will at least be encrypted.
- If you are using a public WIFI, do not log into sites using your username and password. Wait until you have secure connection to do so.
- Look for encrypted and secure websites. Check for the « https » in the web adress to make sure that you have not been re-routed to a malware site.
